Watch It Fly: Boeing Introduces World’s First Hydrogen-Cell Powered Airplane

AFP: The plane flew at a speed of 62 miles an hour for about 20 minutes at an altitude of some 3,300 feet using only the hydrogen battery for power and with just the pilot on board.

It’s not hydrogen-powered! It’s the first rubberband-powered aircraft! *laughter*

Look’s like a racist plane to me. Why is there a cracka flying it and not a brother.

Beth, that is called a spoiler brake. There likely was one om the right wing as well. They are used to slow an aircraft after landing. On some planes, such as the old F/FB-111 fighter-bombers once used by the USAF, they are also used to stabilize the aircraft in roll maneuvers. The space shuttle also uses spoiler brakes.

Judging from the shape of this concept plane, saving weight wherever possible was one of the Boeing design team’s primary concerns. Using spoiler brakes, would allow use of much smaller (and lighter) wheel brakes; and eliminate the need for a parachute brake.

what is the black plastic looking thing on the left wing after landing?

What’s the big deal. In order to power a airliner the amount of weight in batteries needed would never be able to get off the ground.

The plane in the video looks like a modified glider, I am guessing it weighs next to nothing.

No one ever talks about how toxic the batteries are to make.

No more news on the biofuel powered jet by Virgin? Oil companies are heavily invested in the hydrogen solution. It’s no doubt a diversion.

Hydrogen in a couple of decades away. The bridge between now that hydrogen some day is bio-diesel. It’s time is coming very soon as it will provide too many win-win opportunities to not win. In coming years the unused lands of the earth will become bio-diesel crops and it will provide 100’s of millions of jobs in the developing world growing the feed stock for the world energy needs.

Oh, come on guys (Boeing), a hypersonic muon moderated cold fusion rocket would be way cooler.
