MSNBC Analyst: Thompson ‘Shaky’ in Debate Debut

MSNBC: "There's a slight shakiness in Thompson's voice and that hesitance in the first question certainly seemed to show him to be VERY nervous." Some have commented on the somewhat long pause towards the end of his first answer.

What’s so “shakey” about that? Who is the idiot who titles these videos? He’s speaking carefully like any intelligent person should do when answering an important question.

Let us watch the video and decide for ouselves if it’s good or bad, BREITBART!

PS: Go Huckabee.

david   October 9th, 2007 - 4:47 pm

Is it too much to ask of you people to notice what these guys (and gal) are saying instead of the performance they put on in saying it? Looking for substance over style would do both parties a whole lot of good.

Brian Fish   October 9th, 2007 - 4:51 pm

MSNBC: “There’s a slight shakiness in Thompson’s voice.” Some have commented on the somewhat long pause towards the end of his first answer.

What? Who cares? Is anyone listening to what he is saying or does it matter only how he says it? MSNBC sounds like a bunch of gossiping fools.

Tim in California   October 9th, 2007 - 4:51 pm

As a long time Republican I am not impressed with the so-called front runners. That said I suggest more time be spent on the underdoogs. Their answers to the hard questions had a lot more substance to them. The media moguls need to get off Mr.MAyor. Thompson, and Mccain and really start looking at Hunter, Tancredo, and Paul!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RogerC   October 9th, 2007 - 4:57 pm

This is what you fault Fred on?

Lame. You guys are fearful of the Fred.

RON PAUL is the ONLY CHOICE – He is the only one with solutions. http://www.ronpaul2008.com

MadgeOwens   October 9th, 2007 - 5:01 pm

Give me a break………..his voice did not sound shakily at all….liberal hacks just want you to believe every thing they tell you…what crap! How about listening to WHAT he says. You all may learn something important. I like Huckabee and Duncan Hunter..but I like many of them..and any of them .save us from the democrat socialist party!

Ken Menzies   October 9th, 2007 - 5:02 pm

His pause showed that he was thinking and he wanted to chhose the words to describe the way the economy isn’t but the Democrats want us to believe it is.

The fact that people jumped on that pause to suggest something negative about Thompson is just more evidence that people that don’t want him are teribly worried he will win. Thompson did just fine and being the leading conservative in national polls, that is all he really needed to do in this debate.

JWH   October 9th, 2007 - 5:11 pm

Following… Uh… Fred’s … Uh… comedy tour will … Uh… definitely be … Uh… amusing this… Uh… election season. LOL!

Give the man a break! He thinks on his feet, as opposed to a machine gun-delivery by some empty- headed other. His is the voice of a mature man.
I like him a lot.

JWH   October 9th, 2007 - 5:18 pm

“Give the man a break! He thinks on his feet…”

Right… LOL! He …Uh… has absolutely no …Uh… idea what he’s …Uh… talking about. He’s …Uh… flashing back to …Uh… debate prep trying to …Uh… come up with ANYTHING …Uh… to say without looking …Uh… stupider than he …Uh… already does.

Some day I’d like to meet this special group of the intelligentsia, the famous ‘Some say’ people.
‘Some say’ he appeared VERY nervous..
I’d say, it’s the ‘Some say’ people who are the nervous ones.

Tad in Tucson   October 9th, 2007 - 5:33 pm

JWH,

Right. Its much better for a candidate to fire back a pre-planned much-rehearsed answer that may or may not have anything to do with the question. While I agree that he needs to drop the “uh”s, that to me is a man thinking about his words. I prefer a thinker to a good memorizer.

Based on your comments, I’m sure you’re much more intelligent than Senator Thompson. Mocking takes such talent. Perhaps you should run for President.

JWH   October 9th, 2007 - 5:49 pm

“While I agree that he needs to drop the “uh”s, that to me is a man thinking about his words.”

To me it sounds like he’s unprepared and scrambling for answers. He reminds me of Renée Zellweger when she won an Oscar for “Cold Mountain” a while back and managed to utter “uh” and “um” more than 23 times in 45 seconds.

Fred is so much fun!

http://nogibbons.blogspot.com

Danny Del Rossi   October 9th, 2007 - 5:49 pm

There seems to be a swelling undercurrent for Ron Paul at the moment. I’m a democrat, but I think mr. Paul sounds like the only true independent and logical thinker out there. I’d vote for him. As for Fred, well, he’s an actor. The Mayor is a thrice married (the latest is a doozy!) and seemingly less than stable megalomaniac, whose own family give him a wide berth, and the Mitt has the looks but…so whaT?

Joel   October 9th, 2007 - 5:52 pm

Hesitation? And…? Can someone explain to me why this is news?

Frank Morris   October 9th, 2007 - 5:55 pm

And your point is . . . . WHAT?!?

Fred took a second to carefully choose a phrase; is that reason to condemn?

Sheeeesh . . . .

BCM   October 9th, 2007 - 5:58 pm

Good grief. Maybe it is my computer copy, but “shaky”?, talk about looking for something to snip about. And his hesitation at the end? Cuz he didn’t immediately think of the word? What is the expectation here? That he will answer immediately, without hesitation, without uhs, to questions of real importance (I hope so anyway)? I think we all need to get real on this one. He did fine. Next question.

MB   October 9th, 2007 - 6:01 pm

Sounds like he had an echo in the microphone while speaking…
In which case, those who have experienced this will say he did well. :)

Joel   October 9th, 2007 - 6:01 pm

Actually, the content of what he said was a great answer. Leave it to reporters (who’s job is performance over substance–camera whores) to be critical of his pause at the end.

April Lankford, Seattle   October 9th, 2007 - 6:04 pm

We can count on the mainstream media to be fault finding when it benefits their view. When the press has to get this picky about how a man talks, they must be pretty desperate.

MSNBC must be a fault-finder as well. What are the credentials of MSNBC’s analyst? Their bias is evidence of shallowness. This kind of accusation is going to help Fred Thompson get elected. Actually he is the best we have going for us right now.

Keep up the biased ridicule, MSNBC! Let’s put Fred Thompson in the White House!

JWH   October 9th, 2007 - 6:07 pm

Thisi is good. It means we will see Fred Thompson in the WH in ‘09…

Dick Chenney   October 9th, 2007 - 6:10 pm

Who’s ‘enjoying’ what? Fred’s full of it. 3 billion a week on Iraq, all borrowed money. Borrowed mind you from ‘private banks’. Ahhh we see who’s enjoying it now.

Fred knows what he is talking about and will be a great candidate! He will give Mrs. Bill Clinton a run for her money.

Shaky….nope, just thoughtful.

JWH   October 9th, 2007 - 6:18 pm

“JWH seems to be getting off on this.”

Absolutely! I’ve been waiting months for Fred’s debate debut. It did nothing but confirm that he has no idea what he’s talking about and he’s running simply for the fact that his trophy wife is pushing him to do it.

The GOP comedy tour is up in full swing!

How many hrs did this debate last, how pathetic and bias is it that this joke of a news outlet finds this pensive response a criticism. This is why I can’t watch these liberal waste stations for any length of time.

Barry   October 9th, 2007 - 6:47 pm

Nothing “shakey” about his answer whatsoever. He gave factual details, and those details substantiate his assertion that the Bush Economy is very good indeed.

What’s “shakey” is the pure Socialist agenda being advocated by every one of the Democrat candidates.

MSNBC and JWH aren’t used to a presidential candidate who… uh … uses his brain before he engages his mouth.

Very strange headline. He sounded perfectly normal to me. Intelligent and clear.

Leave something in the hands of the media and it’s distortion city. The untruth reigns yet again.

FRedStates   October 9th, 2007 - 7:37 pm

Funny… if he slam-dunked the deliver but said a lot of hyperbole people would be talking about how he’s just and actor and there’s no substance… but here his deliver his “shaky” while his substance are solid and people slam him for being nervous?

This is not American Idol… (though if it was it would gay way more votes!)

Fred was great… and when Christopher tried to take a cheap shot Fred slammed it back right at him.

ImWithFred   October 9th, 2007 - 8:33 pm

This bodes well for Fred in 2008, liberals are already blathering “looking …Uh… stupider than he …Uh… already does.”!!!

They called Reagan (landslide, 2 terms!) and Bush (won twice!) “stupid” too! It’s the liberal template.

AMERICAN Analyst: MSNBC ‘Shaky’ in Debate Debut

Phil   October 9th, 2007 - 8:43 pm

Say whaaaaaaaaaa? What shakiness? Talk about liberal media bias! This is how the guy speaks, for crying out loud. Did you hear him bitch slap Congress re: war on terror question: How 20 year-olds in Iraq better understand this fight than 20-year veterans of Capitol Hill?! Everythng he said was spot on…

Steve S   October 9th, 2007 - 8:55 pm

This MSNBC “analyst” is full of baloney. Thompson gave a very reasoned and coherent answer to the question posed.

Jack   October 9th, 2007 - 8:59 pm

Also Ford was a klutz, Bush 41 was so stupid he was “tone-deaf”, Reagan was “Out of it”/”senile”, GWB is a hick clearing brush down in crawford.

But that Bill Clinton! Wow! He took Arkansas from 50th in the country in public education to 49th! And Hillary!? Smartest woman EVER!

I like it when you libs, JWH, get all snarky. Means that mans a winner.

GWB couldn’t win in ‘00 right? And he’d NEVER get re-elected, right, right?

Go read ‘04 exit polls to cheer yourself up.

Charlie   October 9th, 2007 - 9:01 pm

Thompson’s cancer was first discovered in nodes in his throat and neck. Though in remission, and controllable, this accounts for his period throat clearing and occasional raspy voice.

jtrain   October 9th, 2007 - 9:03 pm

I love how people really “stick to their guns” here in the US…I would consider myself more a democrat than anything else but I must say I am leaning towards the only person I see with ANY integrity and ANY COMMON SENSE..Dr. Ron Paul. I think the rest of them are completely full of sh!t..

exhausted watcher   October 9th, 2007 - 9:15 pm

Performance?

I don’t want a perfomer for president (we had one for 8 years in the 90’s) I want an intelligent adult. I agree with the others, PAY ATTENTION TO THE CONTENT. It’s this kind of brain-dead analysis that is responsible for such lousy candidates in the first place. I think Mr. Thompson is very intelligent and quite credible.

Pundits: Try analyzing the ideas from now on. Leave the performance reviews to Variety.

jamesjohansen   October 9th, 2007 - 9:30 pm

I agree with Tim about tancredo but I think in reality tompson is our best bet

john kean   October 9th, 2007 - 9:32 pm

no wonder the media credibility is at record lows.

if you understood the meaning and value of content you would make such an idiotic comment.

besides what would you expect, really, from a political body that has a 10% approval rating from the public.

low lifes being reviewed by low lifes, doesn’t leave much hope for anything but nonsense.

good luck to us all.

MikeS   October 9th, 2007 - 9:36 pm

Give me a break. I detected NO shakiness at all.

Always style over substance… what difference does that make anyway??

MikeS   October 9th, 2007 - 9:39 pm

I just read Reuters’ take:

“DEARBORN, Michigan (Reuters) – Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson made a crisp debut in his first 2008 debate appearance on Tuesday…”

MSNBC needs to wake up.

BP   October 9th, 2007 - 9:44 pm

“Shaky”? Had that been Obama speaking, MSNBC would’ve no doubt used adjectives like “thoughtful”, “spontaneous”, “sharp” to describe his performance. Perhaps had he filled his pauses with fake, rehearsed, strategic laughter a la Hillary Clinton, MSNBC would’ve focused on the truth of his message instead.

Morty McNutt   October 9th, 2007 - 9:46 pm

First of all, I am not a Fred Thompson fan. I’m really supporting no candiate right now. In November of 2008, I’ll be voting for whoever the Democratic nominee is. That being said, where was the “shaky” voice? I didn’t see/hear it. Also, the long pause? So his mind wavered for a second. He then collected his thoughts. The dude is human. I am sick and tired of people expecting all the candidates to be perfect all the time. ALL the candidates campaign 24 hours a day seven days a week. Most of us could not put up with any of their hectic schedules even for 48 hours, let alone week after week and month after month.
Leave Freddy Boy alone!

Dave was right on with the first comment. The pause emphasizes the importance of what he’s saying. The market isn’t collapsing. The world isn’t coming to an end. Don’t fall into the liberal media’s histeria trap.

Knowledge is power.

evelyn victor   October 9th, 2007 - 10:22 pm

Fred is a sleepy eyed wanker. Most of you are correct though, obsessing on the delivery of the mundane crap he went through the motions of mouthing is shallow and superficial. Better to consider the boiler plate gruel he recited. His answer like saying you see no reason for the cancer patient to die tomorrow. He had a pulse, he took a crap, he’s still ingesting food: Never mind his skin has turned green, pus is oozing from his bum, and the flatulence he emits smells like a corpse buried in a shallow grave. Massive debt, a housing market on the verge of meltdown, jobs still flowing out the door faster than gw’s administration, and the price of oil poised to set new records. Fook him and his happy horse*h*t.

Fred’s pauses and ’shakiness’ are a good sign. George W.’s mastery of his native tongue has enabled him to outfox and outmaneuver the well-spoken Democrats for seven years now.

Steve   October 10th, 2007 - 1:19 am

Shaky? Give me a break. I don’t like the man and I saw no shakiness in his voice and the pause at the end, maybe he just got a yellow light so instead of continuing he decided to summarize at that point and stop. Were his facts wrong? Did he misuse any words? Did he mispronounce any? No, so he’s doing a much better job than the Decider in Chief. Sure he pulled a smoke and mirror trick with the tax cut, but Breitbart didn’t call him on that or anything other than his appearance. Way to elevate political discourse.

jet   October 10th, 2007 - 8:44 am

I know MSNBC is the one with “shaky” market share…. a result from “shaky” non-factual reporting……..report news……..not opinions ……

Joel   October 10th, 2007 - 10:50 am

Okay, the stock market just dipped to its lowest point in a long time back in August and it’s been shakey ever since. The subprime real estate marketing is starting to buckle from all the “speculation” that bankers and investors have been doing with risky mortgages, like ARM and ALT-A mortgages. It mirrors the late 1920s in so many ways that it is truly frightening! Foreclosure rates are at an all-time high and home values have been experiencing the largest drops in over 30 years. And let’s not mention all the other factors (China’s astounding growth, which includes building dozens of major metros and relocated 300 million farmers to these big cities in the next 20 years… by the way, 300 million is about the size of… oh, I don’t know… the USA, perhaps?! … and let’s not even get into the war, oil, climate change and the economic challenges those pickles are posing).

Yep… no recession here…

What an IDIOT!

Who cares if he is “shakey” on the mic… he’s WRONG (which is far worse).

If this guy becomes president, all I gotta say is… “Oh Canada!”

Barry   October 10th, 2007 - 9:59 pm

Of course there will be those who can only pick on something like Fred speaking carefully as to take time to put together the proper words. The others have always seen the value of an education. Fred Thompson is our next president, guaranteed. No one can come up with a real reason why not. Those replying to this post angrily are either pickin’ candidates like a sports fan picks a team just to feel better about themselves, or they’re scared of the truth. Fred will show you the truth, so run and hide or listen to a geniune source of common sense. Go ahead, make your comments, call names back, wet your pants, whatever, just remember that most great people are natural at it, not fake with ever changing opinions based on their own whims.
