Report: EMTs Refuse to Help Dying Pregnant Woman During Breakfast Break

NBC New York: Witnesses said the emergency workers were on break ordering breakfast at the Metro-tech Center Au Bon Pain restaurant where Eutisha Rennix worked as a cashier. She collapsed in a woman's bathroom and several workers and customers asked the EMT workers for help. Instead, they said they walked out of the store telling them to call 911.

People hiding behind their union.

what-do-you-mean-i-must-step-aside-because-i-have-no-healthacrd   December 22nd, 2009 - 1:32 am

Wow !! Our fine healthcare system/Emt on display. Me thinks if her name was bloomberg and rich she would be ok .

Can we BASH and blame Canada Universal healthcare for this.(*_*)

muggins   December 22nd, 2009 - 2:58 am

The union connection makes it all come clear. The only union I was ever in told us we would be fired if we worked through a lunch or coffee break. Also if the foreman or leadman were found working instead of bossing they would be fired. Oddly enough the shipyard I worked in went belly up.

brent   December 22nd, 2009 - 2:59 am

First off someone(paramedics) needs their ass kicked and then the Paramedics who refused to help should be fired on the spot.

RogerCfromSD   December 22nd, 2009 - 3:31 am

Typical union mentality. It leads to this type of callousness.

claspur   December 22nd, 2009 - 4:28 am

A sneak-peek at what’s to be coming with Maobummercorn-Care.

They wouldn’t have got out of the area in their ambulance anyway, after I slit their tires.

Mikeyh0   December 22nd, 2009 - 6:21 am

Was a crime committed? I helped an older woman get out of my cab one time by supporting her under her arms. She fell anyway and sued me. Now I don’t touch ANYONE! That’s just the way it is.

Dave, Tn   December 22nd, 2009 - 7:41 am

Union corruption, Banker corruption, Media corruption. No wonder New York is ranked the most unhappy state in the nation.

demdicks   December 22nd, 2009 - 7:43 am

They were on break, leave them alone. Or is some forced “community service”?
I happen to think my community sucks, they keep voting for liberals just like those NYC idiots, who I’m sure after they vote they wonder where their check is and why does it cost so much to live in NYC.

demdicks   December 22nd, 2009 - 7:45 am

Maybe if moabummer focused on LEGAL reform and not health reform we wouldn’t have these stories, I agree with anyone who will not assist due to lawsuit risks, it just happens way too often.

Tom   December 22nd, 2009 - 7:48 am

Sounds like CONgress…..

pynaetlb   December 22nd, 2009 - 8:23 am

Just wait until our socialized healthcare plan goes into effect. EMT Lunches will be two hours longer and the calls for EMTs ten times higher. Obama care is definately going to up the percentage of healthy people in the US because all the unhealthy will soon die off.

bill (indiana)   December 22nd, 2009 - 8:23 am

What were the race of the emt’s so I can give Jessie and Al a call if they’re not the right color?

CyniKal   December 22nd, 2009 - 8:48 am

Well, there you go. Get used to it folks.

With the New Obama Deal-Me-In HealthCare, THAT’S exactly the kind of care you’ll be getting.

Just don’t have a heart attack while it’s the EMS’s breaktime.

Somebody should’ve driven her to Canada. They have better healthcare there…accroding to the Leftist Jackboots.

(Just a thought but… Want to bet this poor lady voted for The One?)

msbdysnatcher   December 22nd, 2009 - 8:52 am

I say they should go to jail. Does New York Have the good sam law? They need to post these two dirt bags all over the inter net and send fliers to all fire stations and hospitals so they can’t get a job and hurt any body else. God be with her son I hope for only the best for him.

ChuckyCheese1   December 22nd, 2009 - 9:11 am

“we never condone activity that could harm the public” … uh, no kidding idiots. your job is TO condone activity that HELPS the public, and not establish a work atmosphere that condones INACTIVITY that leaves the public harmed. Just double-speaking union nonsense. R.I.P. lady, you’re just another death caused by compassionate liberalism. Good thing you weren’t a birthed baby in Virginia still attached to the umbilical cord – then you’re mom could have stabbed you to death legally (more liberal compassion).

Off Duty   December 22nd, 2009 - 9:34 am

Where’s the victim’s husband?

Mike-E   December 22nd, 2009 - 9:37 am

A few months ago something similar happened in the UK. They were on their mandated break. Regulations have them only respond to dispatched calls, the union holds them back even further.

Iam glad you brought that up , Thats why the ONE is trying to change and reform the broken system and we can see why. But the Repukes just luv the current broken system. on the bright side the insurance company will not have to pay up, guess they will enjoy tidy profit .*sigh*

O'Really?   December 22nd, 2009 - 10:04 am

Hey, stupid people, this happened with today’s health care system in place. You know…the best in the World today. Blaming it on “Obamacare” before it is even passed is a bit of a stretch even for you illogical right wing morons. Before you start crucifying people perhaps you should wait until all the facts are in. If these guys were trained EMT guys and they walked away from an emergency then they should be disciplined accordingly. If they could have helped, they should have helped.

Imntacrook   December 22nd, 2009 - 10:13 am

It’s the unions stupid. Obama = unions

Angry Xgen'er   December 22nd, 2009 - 10:30 am

Much as I want to jump on the outrage bandwagon, those seemingly irresponsible EMT’s, are not responsible for that womans death.

BobPDX   December 22nd, 2009 - 10:45 am

Sad story.

“Look for, that union label” Right…

Your health care will be run by these people.

You go into an ER, you need immediate care, you take a ticket and wait.

You don’t feel good, you wait a month to see a doctor.

We are giving up the best health care system in the world.

Why are we doing this again?

Oh! I remember, so they can increase our taxes.

By the way, if you union folk think you are going to continue making those big salaries, you are sadly mistaken. In the New World Order, you can’t make more than the folk in Japan, China and elsewhere.

Good Luck and Merry Christmas…

PKJ   December 22nd, 2009 - 10:56 am

I won’t go so far as to say the EMT’s are responsible for her death. She may have died even if they had administered aid. But to be in the room while someone is in need of emergency medical attention and to ignore that need is a disgrace. That is their job. They completed extensive training to help people in emergency situations. They failed miserably. They are in the wrong job. They should not hold a position where the health and welfare of others is in their hands.

Don’t give me that union crap. If the union would have brought them up on grievance, they had just cause to get the grievance dismissed. If the union refused to dismiss it they could have taken it to the press and the community would have been enraged at the union. If they are that incapable of making a decision and thinking for themselves, then they should be kicked off the job and out of the union. People get union grievances dismissed everyday and if ever there would have been a reason for a dismissal, this would have been it.

Thoughts & prayers are with her son, family and friends. The people who witnessed this event will never forget what happened here.

freedom rocks   December 22nd, 2009 - 11:04 am

these are our first responders, seiu has taken over the public service employees including your nurses, take a hard look, this is the way organized labor behaves, welcome to your brave new world. Angry X, they may not have been responsible for her death, but first responders not trying to help a dying citizen in their midst, is a moral issue, of course there are no morals in a secular society.

O'Really?   December 22nd, 2009 - 12:03 pm

This has absolutely nothing to do with unions. This is all about what these guys did, or didn’t do, and the choices that they made. No one said, “I’m not doing this; I’m off the clock”. Until all the facts come in perhaps you shouldn’t speculate and SFU!! Blaming your whipping boy du jour may make you feel better but you really do come across as pretty stupid.

Yes Really   December 22nd, 2009 - 1:27 pm

I am a union member, not because I wanted to be a member, but, in order to keep my job, I had to become a member. I know for a fact, union members do the least amount of work for the most pay and benefits… It’s good work if you can get it, about like congress, but, not as good.
So just remember… Union Members are people too, we have our rights, bought and paid for.

freedom rocks   December 22nd, 2009 - 1:36 pm

O’Really? continue to deny facts, distort language, rewrite history and hurl insults, its all you got. You have been well trained. How ironic you point out all the facts are not in, yet you can say conclusively union think was not a factor.

daisie13   December 22nd, 2009 - 1:45 pm

Every person should be held accountable for their actions(unless they are insane). Could this fall under the new category of a “hate crime”? Is it hate to neglect someone and they die? Perhaps unions should stipulate in union contracts to their members to “do the right thing” even on breaks because its hatefull not too….

O'Really?   December 22nd, 2009 - 1:48 pm

Freedom rocks,
You’re right. I shouldn’t have said that unions were not involved. But then again most of the comments on this site, including yours, jumped to that conclusion. A more correct statement is that there is absolutely nothing in this story that implies that unions were involved in spite of what you want to believe.

“Thats why the ONE is trying to change and reform the broken system and we can see why.”

If you call what he’s doing “reform”. then you can’t “see” period. Beleive me, there’s NO medical service that can heal your type of utter blindness.

But hey, there’s nothing like the truth to wise you up. When you have that heart attack at the SubShoppe, and the EMS’s step OVER you to get to the sandwich counter, it’ll be too late to change your vote.

Typical EAST COAST mentality. It leads to this type of callousness.

bob   December 22nd, 2009 - 5:16 pm

The emt’s should be arrested for not helping the woman. They are professionals, on the clock or not, it is their jobs. Police must respond to serious crimes on or off duty. And professionals can not hide behind the fear of being sued. I would rather be sued for trying to help rather than being sued for not helping. Professionals can be sued for not taking action.

freedom rocks   December 22nd, 2009 - 6:17 pm

O’Really? when you experience it you’ll understand it, and many of us have, just speaking from experience, you should try it sometime.

O'Really?   December 23rd, 2009 - 9:26 am

Freedom,
I’m sorry. I must have missed something in the translation. Just what am I supposed to “experience”?

That makes me so sad for her adorable little boy. God bless that family.

Pondering   December 24th, 2009 - 11:25 am

Did they not help her because she was Canadian, were they off the clock and possibly been held libel, union rules, racism, any number of questions need answered before jumping to conclusions….
