‘I Have Some News’: McCain Knocks Obama’s Debate Answer on Al Qaeda in Iraq

"I will not surrender to Al Qaeda."

rover;”It will be fun to watch McCain try to defend why we should continue the war in Iraq for the next 1000 years has he wants.”

Take anybody out of context and you’ll weaken your argument.
McCain said we could be there 50 years, make it a hundred because we’ll be a stabilizing force there like we’re still in South Korea and Japan after 50-60 years. He’s not talking about actual armed conflict.

Kevin   February 27th, 2008 - 2:10 pm

@eme “McCain said we could be there 50 years, make it a hundred because we’ll be a stabilizing force there like we’re still in South Korea and Japan after 50-60 years.”

140,000 troops and $2 billion dollars a week is NOT a stabilizing force. It is an invasion force. There is NO peace agreement or ceasefire in sight. Stop believing the long list of republican lies about Iraq and stop snorting thier bums.

Gail   February 27th, 2008 - 2:12 pm

McCain knows it himself – if he can’t sell the war, he loses. Sadly, he’s already lost – nobody is very concerned about Papa Smurf. McCain’s solution to the economy: “Keep the Tax Cuts for the Rich”.

He’s weak. He’s old. He’s Old Washington.

Only the very fringes of the Right wing GOP’s support McCain – his own party doesn’t “really” support him. See, those very few (as compared to Obama supporters) McCain supportors just don’t get it – PEOPLE ARE SICK OF THE WAR – GOP’s, DEM’s, Indies, Green, we’re all sick of the WAR-the constant drain on our economy, our hard earned dollars going to help the rich (oil companies), the lies, the deception, the constant scandals from the GOP side. McCain will lose on these issues, lest he try to speak about economics, something he knows very little about – The 2 most important issues for Americans in this election are the economy and an end to the war.

Gene   February 27th, 2008 - 2:13 pm

He also made the statement that the US bombed Pakistan a couple of days ago the take down a third ranking Al Qaede operative. I can’t find any admission by our government to back this up.

Joe   February 27th, 2008 - 2:42 pm

Rover – Was there any terrorists in the United States prior to 911? No, there were no terrorists in Iraq. That is just niave.

“There is NO peace agreement or ceasefire in sight.”

Kevin – Please tell us who the peace agreement or ceasefire would be with? These are Saddam following insurgents and Al Qaeda that we are battling in Iraq that know no borders.

I just wonder if I can hold some of you folks responsible if a retreat from Iraq causes an attack on the US initiated there? Then again we couldn’t hold the people responsible who buried their head in the sand pre-WWII. I just don’t understand how hard it is for people to understand that we are not fighting a country. Ignoring the Islamic fascists will not make them go away. It didn’t work against the fascists Nazis. Ignoring them only emboldens them. Everybody forgets the Clinton years when we were attacked 5 times. I guess it is your philosphy that you would rather fight them here. For your sake, I hope that they don’t attack your city and kill your friends like they did mine.

Joe   February 27th, 2008 - 2:53 pm

“The 2 most important issues for Americans in this election are the economy and an end to the war.”

Gail – Please tell us how well the economy will be if we retreat and are attacked again by Islamic terrorists who have a country and oil money?

The most important issue IS national security period. Without it there is no economy and there is no utopia. Everybody wants this war to end. The only difference is that some want to retreat before there is stablity. I just don’t understand why you think that will be good for the United States. Please enlighten me.

eme   February 27th, 2008 - 3:10 pm

Kevin;”140,000 troops and $2 billion dollars a week is NOT a stabilizing force. It is an invasion force. There is NO peace agreement or ceasefire in sight. Stop believing the long list of republican lies about Iraq and stop snorting thier bums.”

Hey Kevin,
I’m sure the U.S. won’t have that many troops under arms or will be spending that amount of money as a stabilizing force.

according to the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments in Washington, and U.S. Dept. if Defense http://www.defenselink.mil/news/newsarticle.aspx?id=2966
The U.S. has spent less than 1% of it’s GDP,(gross domestic product) in 4years in Iraq and only 4% total Defense Budget last year. Compare this to 14% for 12 yearsin Vietnam, 9% in Korea and a whopping 34% of GDP in WWII.
I agree that it’s almost an imponderable amount of money but after 9-11 and an estimated 3 trillion dollar hit on the U.S. economy, it’s absolutely a manageable amount.
The situation in Iraq is demonstrably better now than it was last year and the year before that. You can find fault in every war the U.S. has ever fought.(more U.S. troops lost their lives practicing for D-Day in WWII than have died in Iraq.
We can throw numbers at each other all day long.
No need to insult me with snide comments if you want to be have a mature disagreement.

Trochilus   February 27th, 2008 - 3:28 pm

Back on July 18th of last year the Democrats also tried to cut off debate on a bill intended to force a withdraw. They failed and they will fail again.

AP reported the fact of that debate back then in a story that began:

“WASHINGTON (AP) – Senate Republicans scuttled a Democratic proposal ordering troop withdrawals from Iraq in a showdown Wednesday that capped an all-night debate on the war.

The 52-47 vote fell short of the 60 votes needed to cut off debate under Senate rules.”

Had the Democrats succeeded, our nation would now be humiliated and retreating, having abandoned an ally whose people we freed, and having in our cravenness, emboldened al-Qaeda to become a major force throughout the Middle East. And, we would have clearly signaled our other allies, both there in the region, and throughout the world that we can no longer be relied upon.

How long would it have been before al-Qaeda an other terrorists would have been back on our shores, and at our throats? But because of the surge, they are a discredited and defeated force, with recruitment down and prospects dimmed.

During that all night debate, at a little after 4 am, John McCain, his campaign for the Presidency on the brink of collapse, nevertheless stood and delivered one of the great speeches in all of American history. Yet no one but a few bloggers (e.g., Ed Morrissey at Captain’s Quarters) reported his stirring words at that moment.

Senator McCain concluded his speech as follows:

“I am privileged, as we all are, to be subject to the judgment of the American people and history. But, my friends, they are not always the same judgment. The verdict of the people will arrive long before history’s. I am unlikely to ever know how history has judged us in this hour. The public’s judgment of me I will know soon enough. I will accept it, as I must. But whether it is favorable or unforgiving, I will stand where I stand, and take comfort from my confidence that I took my responsibilities to my country seriously, and despite the mistakes I have made as a public servant and the flaws I have as an advocate, I tried as best I could to help the country we all love remain as safe as she could be in an hour of serious peril.”

“I will stand where I stand . . .” Courage and steadfastness in a real moment of peril is the very mark of good leadership.

Thank you President Bush and John McCain, and thank you to all those brave troops who have put your lives on the line for our nation, and taken on an implacable enemy of this nation. We will not abandon you.

“There were no Al-Qaida in Iraq before we entered the war…” ~ Hussein Barack

If that’s true, good. That is exactly where I want Al-Qaida. On foreign soil fighting the greatest, nastiest military force in the history of the earth.

We apparently are wiping them out faster than Al-Qaida can enter. Sounds to me like a rousing success.

I know it’s killing you libs that the surge worked since you’re actively pursuing your goal of America losing the war, but in reality lefties, you’ve lost again. But by all means, scream the Dimmie mantra louder!

mouthbreather   February 27th, 2008 - 8:45 pm

haters blinded with hate!
sad really sad.

Diogenes   February 27th, 2008 - 8:54 pm

I can’t believe you think we can win. wake up folks you have already bankrupt the country doing exactly what bin laden wanted you to do. no al queda in iraq either. what a bunch of spoon faced clones who can do nothing but repeat soundbites you hear. pathetic

Diogenes   February 27th, 2008 - 8:56 pm

i don’t think the manchurian candidate is a stable answer!

Mark   February 27th, 2008 - 9:10 pm

Just another block of evidence to prove that Senator Usama Hussiam Omoma is a terrorist

Rover   February 27th, 2008 - 9:31 pm

Gee… There were not any terrorists, insurgents, or al qaeda in Iraq before the invasion.
The Iraq invasion was and is a disastrous mistake. It will be fun to watch McCain try to defend why we should continue the war in Iraq for the next 1000 years has he wants.

libsukbad   February 27th, 2008 - 9:33 pm

Alert to liberals; Canada, England and other countries with socialist style government run health care systems are showning severe cracks in their sustainability( I just threw that word in there because I know libs love it). Some reports are even suggesting without major cash infusions, i.e. tax increases, they will soon collapse. Another question for libs, what do you think of the fact that the global temperature has fallen almost a full degree in the last year, virtually wiping out the cumulative increase of the last CENTURY!!! or is that a part of algore’s master plan and the cute little curly mercury light bulbs are working? sheesh.

Dave   February 27th, 2008 - 10:14 pm

Ok lefties what’s your solution? Easy to criticize, what’s the solution? Abandon Iraq and destabilize the entire region? Keep a smaller force on hand thus increasing American casualties? Stop carping and under cutting the president at every turn and win the war? Your short on answers and long on venom. If the McGovern like Obama wins then what? Put daisies in our hair and sing “Puff the magic dragon”? Don’t think that will help much.

Rover   February 27th, 2008 - 10:52 pm

Sorry conservatives…

You have FAILED America…

When we were attacked at our home, you “folded” on us.

Instead of going directly after the enemy we all faced, you had to twisted it all to your own
“political” needs. In the end, you failed it all… Your cronies are all in jail now :D And “your” next :D

Instead of listening the the generals and commanders on how to defend our nation, YOU all listened to Carl Rove…

And now we have a weak force in Afghanistan, Pakistan is falling, and Iraq is just a total unneeded mess we are paying dearly for.

You have done ZERO “right”!!

Stupidity and ignorance have gotten us into this mess, but it will NOT get us out. Now is a time for brilliance instead of being a dumba**…

McCain might love to take us all to the early grave with him. But Americans will overcome you worthless tards. Expect the Republicans to be simply slaughtered now ;D

But hey!

McCain/Keating 08 :D

Lets face it, Obama is either a total idiot or he is simply trying to help his Muslim brothers. The War on Terror alone is the reason why Obama should never never never become the commander and chief.

ihopehewins   February 28th, 2008 - 2:51 am

It takes a real proud winner like McCain to keep on fighting a losing war. A real genius soldier with a real knack for dealing with human behavior. haha
Who you gonna call in Iraq? Ghostbusters.
He’ll be making plenty of money like boy Shrub too i’m sure.

McCain already has that strong vinegar smell to him.
But i wish he’d hurry up and start smelling like formaldehyde.

libsukbad   February 28th, 2008 - 5:14 am

History has already shown that leftist regimes and their policies fail time and time again throughout the world, the American left is no exception. I don’t think putting a friend of che gueverra lovers, weather underground and calypso louie farrakan among other such ilk in the White House will help them historically either, so let’s prevent it. Again lefties, nazi Germany, Stalin and his USSR, most of South America, Mussolini, most of Africa and Eastern Europe have already shown us enough of liberal dogma to conclude it as an utter and complete failure. Unfortunately for their own self preservation, liberals tend to ignore history they can’t get away with re-writing.
