Airport Scare: MIT Student’s Bomb ‘Art’ Shirt Revealed by Cops

An MIT student with a fake bomb strapped to her chest was arrested at gunpoint Friday at Logan International Airport and later claimed it was artwork, officials said. "She said that it was a piece of art and she wanted to stand out on career day," an officer said at a news conference. "She claims that it was just art, and that she was proud of the art and she wanted to display it."

How could a person so stupid make it into MIT.

Matt   September 21st, 2007 - 12:24 pm

How long till the ACLU is handling her lawsuit for first amendment violations.

Sapoazul   September 21st, 2007 - 12:33 pm

Only in America can people still be so naive, and take life for granted like this. What she did was not a mistake, nor art was just a pure display of tipical irresponsible young America.
Next time she should try that in Iraq, or Iran, Or Israel.

UnPCd   September 21st, 2007 - 12:37 pm

This is taking ‘freedom of speech’ and ‘personal art taste’ too far. She endangered not only herself but many 1000s of workers and travelers ALL for her little ‘joke’ and ‘artistic pride’. Its my opinion that she probably planned a lawsuit against the Government as she designed her ‘art project’ knowing the big bullies were going to restrict her ’speech’ She is a terrorist, fake bomb or not! BUT the ACLU and others will defend her and probably get her remaining education paid for by the mean ole TSA, police, local and federal governments…aka US Taxpayers!!!

This pathetic excuse for an American should have been taken to jail and fined. And to think anyone would defend her ignorance is somethign I find personally demeaning as a tax paying citizen.

fwap   September 21st, 2007 - 2:07 pm

If she’d gotten shot, what a piece of performance art that would’ve been, right? What an idiot.

Overreaction   September 21st, 2007 - 2:41 pm

I hope no old ladies with light-up Christmas tree sweaters try walking into airports. I guess blinking LEDs are fake bombs now.

Mike   September 21st, 2007 - 4:08 pm

This is a standard prototyping breadboard with some LEDs on it. Is anything electronic not immediately recognisable to be a consumer device assumed to be a bomb?

Scott   September 21st, 2007 - 4:48 pm

Let’s be realistic for a minute…

Nobody here should really believe she’ll be prosecuted in Boston or anywhere else in Massachusetts for anything substantive. Her website and MySpace and Facebook pages will get millions of hits. She is now a celebrity. She will receive fawning attention for weeks from media and peer alike.

Logan airport security will be portrayed as reactionary and mean spirited towards a young genius whose only so-called crime was dissent against an unelected president fighting an illegal war. Had the guards used any amount of force on this person, they would be suspended and investigated by multiple governmental and private litigation agencies conducting criminal and civil lawsuits.

The cops are criminals and the sinners are saints–that’s the reflex of everyone under the age of 40 in the Western world because that’s what every comic book, song, TV show, movie, and professor says is “real” truth.

Traditionalist America cannot hike up their collective pants, shake their fists, scream “YOU KIDS GET OFFA MY LAWN!” and discount the influence of the “artist” on the younger generation.

Stephen Dewey   September 21st, 2007 - 5:06 pm

People, cool it for a bit. Her only real fault was underestimating the degree of sensitivity of security professionals. Now, those professionals have a reason to be sensitive, and so she was in the wrong… and this will teach her a lesson.

But let’s let the system of justice correct this misunderstanding. Quit using this as an opportunity to use your outrage to justify your own existence or make yourself feel important. It’s pathetic.

As for the comment by somebody who said she should have tried that in another country… I happen to like American standards of social freedoms a bit better. She went a bit beyond those standards this time, but let’s not forget that our country stands for trying to extend our freedoms as far as possible. Let’s not let terrorism make us lose track of that goal.

Matt D.   September 21st, 2007 - 5:15 pm

This goes to show that just because you’re in MIT doesn’t necessarily mean you’re smart. :-)

All hail common sense, for some of those who should have it, lack it.

Beez   September 21st, 2007 - 5:31 pm

No doubt, this is an example of MIT continuing to reap the benefits of its efforts to “diversify” their population. None of the females I knew at MIT 20 years ago would have been this clueless.

seejay   September 21st, 2007 - 6:47 pm

Excuse me! But she is obviously a Woman.
Any critisism of her is SEXISM!

And I can’t help but notice that she appears to be some sort of “mixed-race” individual.

So you’re all RACISTS as well!

Tony   September 21st, 2007 - 7:33 pm

Her mistake was she assumed people would know that it was a breadboard and not a bomb. She now knows what kind of morons work at our airport.

Shark   September 21st, 2007 - 8:01 pm

What is scary is that she is smarter than all of us :| But she should have never underestimate how incredibly stupid other people are…

Of course, she never meant it to look like a bomb. That part of the story was just “concocted” by the police and FOX…

The charges will probably be reduced to walking in public with a defective tail light…

UnPCd   September 21st, 2007 - 8:24 pm

>

Are you forgetting the PLAY DOH she held in her hand that she had no explanation for when questioned by the police?

That ‘clay’ probably resembled C4 or other explosive material.

smc   September 21st, 2007 - 9:26 pm

Shark, I can’t help but laugh every time I see your name. The only thing scary is the fact you’re defending her. Actually, based on your history this should be expected. The irony in you labeling the security officials stupid versus the MIT student is incredible. Stephen Dewey, your pathetic! I happen to not like the deranged version of social freedoms you feel you and this student are entitiled to. You have the audacity to call this “a misuderstanding.” So security should’ve taken a step back and said, “you know even though people are losing their lives left and right due to terrorists who primarily use expolsives I think we’ll sit this one out because this student is most likely not carrying an actual bomb but advertising her recent art work.”

VivaGore   September 21st, 2007 - 9:54 pm

Bush and Rove are making people overreact to everything, now including art! They should just let this poor woman go… and also apologize to her. Democrats would never allow this to happen. Only war mongers and republicans would arrest a harmless college student due to t-shirt art. Democrats are smarter than republicans and should be elected to all offices. Then, these type of things would stop happening and we would be at peace in the world. And then, we could start solving Global Warming! PULL OUT NOW!

Viva Gore! Viva Kucinich! Viva No More War! Viva Democratic leadership! Viva Pelosi! Viva Reid! Viva Obama!

Stephen Dewey   September 21st, 2007 - 11:36 pm

SMC, actually if you read what I said, I said that she was in the wrong and security was right to detain her since they perceived her to be a threat. But it was clearly a misunderstanding. That’s just a fact unless you are going to claim that she actually intended to cause others consternation.

Shark   September 22nd, 2007 - 12:08 am

@smc

“Shark, I can’t help but laugh every time I see your name.” I am glad I bring such joy to your little life :D

“The only thing scary is the fact you’re defending her.”

What was her crime? Carrying an electronic toy that the airport officials thought was a threat. They confronted her and it was just all a miss understanding, so everyone goes on with their lives…

But there is a far deeper problem… This is just the kind of fear that the terrorist want us to have. We are afraid of anyone that is not like us. We hate other races, religions, peoples because we fear them being unknown. Terrorist don’t win wars, they destroy by generating “misguided” fear, hatred, and chaos. Terrorist’s worst problem is that their victim’s might respond “brilliantly”. Their greatest hope is that they react “stupidly”…

“you know even though people are losing their lives left and right due to terrorists who primarily use explosives”.

70,000 dead Iraq civilians later… We call the enemy in Iraq terrorists. In the 1775 we called them patriots when they were on our side. We have killed far more of them than they have us, that’s why we are winning so super duper big over there just like in Vietnam…

Sorry smc, the world, law and justice, wars, winning and loosing, terrorism and safety ,etc. are far too complex to be handled by idiots…

I fear terrorist no more than I fear driving down the street, bad weather, disease, etc. which are far more a statistical risk than terrorists. A lot of things kill more of us than terrorism… But the terrorists don’t want us to think that. They want us to live in fear and hatred until we destroy “ourselves”. They can’t destroy us, but they know we “can” totally destroy ourselves… But it takes a serious lake of brain power…

Admittedly, forums like this don’t attract Nobel laureates in peace and most here have a low enough IQ even when their sober. But it is an indicator of how bad the internal situation is. Happily, it is getting far better than worse these days :)

Of course, we all have personal political views too. But those of us that are right know who we are :D

Pelosi 07!!! There is still plenty of time!!!

Rob   September 24th, 2007 - 12:18 pm

She is obviously not getting enough attention.

T_Hawk   September 24th, 2007 - 6:30 pm

The “art” argument was for courts of days gone by. The current judicial system will chew her up and spit her out, unless, of course, she pays a bribe.

James Boggs   September 24th, 2007 - 8:02 pm

To all of you who feel that this poor girl has been misunderstood and abused by the system, get a life, ESPECIALLY you, Shark!

Rule of thumb, boys and girls; learn how to write, and learn how to spell. It matters not how strong your belief system is if you are too ignorant to know how to spell words and use basic grammar. Really, how can any of you expect to be taken seriously if these posts you make online are a reflection of your intelligence? Misspelled words, grammar errors and insulting phrases are three good signs of people with too much time on their hands who evidently barely made it through school. If any of you defending this girl are FROM MIT (with all the grammatical errors), than THAT is pretty sad. Then again, coming from an institution that employs Noam Chomsky, it’s not surprising.
