I am borderline shocked by how fast this pilot A) figured out what had JUST happened and B) had his commentary all ready to go … he has reflexs like a cat.

What a waste of lives to have four or more helicopters chasing some drunk guy so a breathless blond anchor can report it. I feel for the families of the fallen. These stations have blood on their hands.

Just confirms that TV news has lost all moralistic bearing in our society.

First of all it was a tragic event. But what strike sme as odd as the chopper pilot starts saying he doesn’t want to get too close and wants to be cautious because the people on the ground could be friends of his. Funny, the media never shys away from tragedy, much less showing the graphic parts of it, unless they are friends or fellow media. Then they all of a sudden get a conscience. Reason number 5,451 local news is worthless.

Secondly, car chases are not news. They are ratings grabbers and the media inteferes with police doing their job by doing what they do. So sad these people lost their lives for covering something that is so meaninless.

Some guy driving 40 mph in a stolen truck?????

Just put a webcam on the freeway and you can see stolen trucks go by at 70mph all day long if you actually run the plates.

A year from now, the suspect driving the stolen truck will be back out on the streets, the blow-dried anchors at the news desk will probably be different, there will be other helicopters buzzing around chasing other irrelevant “news” items and jeopardizing the lives of innocent people on the ground… and these helicopter pilots will be dead and buried and will have died for nothing. What a sick, sick culture we live in.

Terrible tragedy..in many ways.
All very revealing. Why didn’t Daniel of NBC not want to “get in too close”…..because they “could be really good friends of ours”?
So it’s OK to exploit peoples’ lives whom are not “really good friends.” I guess if you’re not a friend of the media you are just a money making opportunity?

Another senseless tragedy brought on because of the excitement of video technology and our craving for it. Vicarious voyeurism sells, I guess. I’m really curious as to how many of us really get hooked on “car chases”. If they are being broadcast live, how many people are even watching TV news when they are happening. With my schedule it is rare that I have the opportunity to watch, and I rarely watch TV anyway. But I must admit that I have watched them if I’m already watching TV. It is just so sad that 4 people got killed to bring us “news”.

It’s interesting to witness the sensitivity displayed for their own not typically seen in their dealings with the public. How many times have you seen them shove a camera in the face of a victim or relative for the sake of some news footage. Nona is on the mark. Hopefully some good will come of this including restrictions on following chases in such a manner. Anything to put a leash on the news whores.

My definition of TV news has always been “getting paid poorly to do things mother told you never to do.”

This car chase business is a lot more stupid than chasing hurricanes or tornadoes.

It’s time for the RTNDA to provide industry leadership and police itself. Establish guidelines for WHY a chopper must cover a live event. Establish limitations on the number of choppers in the air — and if news directors still wanna cover the silliness of a car chase, figure out how to do pool coverage.

If the RTNDA can’t help the industry police itself, the FAA needs to fight the “freedom of the press” argument (what, freedom of the press to kill each other in spectacular balls of fire?), and insist on the safety of people on the ground.

Enough is enough.

I thought the NBC reporter was very professional and respectful in his commentary and not zooming in on the carnage. They did a much better job than the other stations.

You don’t want to get to close because of possible secondary explosions. And of COURSE they are going to feel more for friends of theirs, then they would for strangers, that is a natural response. Would you feel exactly the same if a stranger dies rather than a close friend? Come on now.

I think most of you are just finding a place to vent your frustrations of the media (Which I think are valid.) However, I think that 1) helicopter reporters do what they do precisely because they DO NOT want to be one of those “shove a mic in your face” type of reporter. Doing it via helicopter by definition distances you from your story. 2) Don’t blame the reporter/pilots for covering a “meaningless” car chase–their bosses dictate what they cover and what they don’t, so don’t use this tragedy of their lives to complain about that. Complain to their management.

My heart goes out to their families and their colleagues.
