It is set by traders on Wall Street who look at buyers and sellers of oil, they evaluate supply and demand, look at the outlook foroil producers and consumers, analyze political and economic risks, and look for any news that could impact the market, such as a hurricane heading toward the Gulf of Mexico.
Using sophisticated mathematical models, the day’s news, rumours and gut feelings, they bid crude prices up or down.
Big oil companies lost their power to control prices partly because of antitrust legislation.

The reason the oil prices go up is because OPEC controls the supply. THey cut the supply, we pay big bucks. We start drilling for oil in America–the prices will drop–OPEC will try to compete by lowing prices even before we get a drop out of the ground.

The people who bought the SUVs, Hummers and large pickups are as much to blame as the oil companies/OPEC. You have increased demand that affects all of us, including people who do their best to conserve.

Also, more drilling of US oil isn’t going to help much, nor for a long time, and the experts doubt it will materially affect the price of oil. Stop looking at simplistic answers that are not realistic and start taking responsibility.

I am so tired of all you ignorant people making baseless comments about oil and energy. Let’s be fair for once and get some facts straight.

A) The west colonized all resourceful countries for years and to date controls them in a less obvious manner. Oil was a major national wealth which we stole for many years through colonization.

B). Last time I checked, when you own something of value, you are allowed to name your own price and OPEC members are no exception to that rule. We as consumers should change our way of life. Americans have less than 5% of the world’s population, but consume over 25% of the world’s supply, of which over 40% goes to our wasteful automobiles!!

C) Out of 20 Million barrels that we consume in this country each day, 6 million is produced domestically. Although everybody blames the Saudis’, we import more oil from Canada than any OPEC member.

In conclusion, we need to make use of alternative energy to lessen our reliance our oil. When the demand for oil falls, OPEC could make all the cuts it wants, but it won’t keep prices from falling.
