Obama Calls for ‘Diplomatic Surge That Includes Iran’

"Because if Maliki can tolerate as normal neighbor-to-neighbor relations in Iran, then we should be talking to them as well. I do not believe we’re going to be able to stabilize the situation without them."

I’m glad Obama finally said what I have been saying for a couple of months now. The President of Iran did say last fall (when he spoke at a university here in the U.S.) that Iran would like to be friends with everyone except Israel. That was a major step forward for a country that has repeatedly wished us dead. But no one in our current administration was willing to offer the olive branch.

Our troubles with Iran have gone on too long. Iran has more means to hurt us than we have to hurt them. Only yesterday, Iran was pressing OPEC to sell oil in a currency other than the dollar, which would cost us even more to buy oil, since the value of the dollar is down. When Iran supports terrorism, then they bleed us dry, for we are borrowing to pay for these ongoing wars, which also increase the price of oil and further strangle our economy.

As long as we are at odds with Iran, then the other Arab countries are afraid to be very helpful to us in any way, since they do not want to jeopardize their relationship with Iran.

If we resumed normal relations with Iran, and the President of Iran denounced terrorism publicly, then it would not be so easy for Al-Quaeda or whomever to recruit suicide bombers.

Yes, the President of Iran could still do dirty deeds against us in secret. But what have we got to lose? Talk (or even some airplane parts that Iran needs) is much cheaper than the 3 trillion dollars of debt that we have already incurred – and there is no end to these wars in sight without a different plan.

Our troops are already over-stretched and we could not possibly engage in war with any other country right now, even if we had the money to do so. So it makes no sense whatsoever for McCain to be accusing Iran of something every day, as well as getting the names of the Muslim groups mixed up every time (McAlzheimer?).

Obama has the only solution.

DontTaseMeBro   April 8th, 2008 - 9:03 pm

Here we go! Obama wants to cuddle up to all of our enemies … even if that means dumping Israel. I was wondering why America was never mentioned specifically in Revelation. Now I know … in the end we abandon Israel and the only one left to defend her is God himself. May God have mercy on us.

JimBo   April 8th, 2008 - 9:23 pm

Sgt Menendez… IT’S A VOLUNTEER ARMY. GET OUT AND GBET A REAL JOB!!!

Senator Obama… speaking like a man who has all of THREE YEARS EXPERIENCE IN THE US SENATE.

Brilliant.

I spoke with an Obama supporter and asked her which specific issue she likes best about Senator Obama. Her response, “He’s positive.”

I said, “So you mean when he sits down to speak with Iran’s “president” he could be positive by saying stuff like; Gosh, you are much taller in person than on TV. Or, You don’t sweat much for wearing all those sheets. Or, could you guys start making those IED out of chocolate?” I thought all those statements were postive but she failed to agree with me.

Interesting that the only “issue” she could come up with is that he is “positive”.

Obama , his wife,Rev wright,The new Black panther Party,The nation of Islam and all their supporters…should move to Iran! They have more in common with Iran then America. Vote McCain.

Obama has about as much geopolitical common sense as Jimmy Carter. I’d give this nitwit about six months in office before we had our first military coup!

SSgt. Nick Menendez   April 9th, 2008 - 2:27 am

I agree with Obama Whole heartedly.

get us out of here man!

Iranian leaders will love to hear you talk, B. Hussein. Have some tea and cookies, too, so you are all getting along. Trust them, as they never will tell a lie like GW has. They are just misunderstood and if we can just bow down to their greatness, we can all get along. In peace. Or in pieces.

pertello   April 9th, 2008 - 2:52 am

YOUR CAPTION QUOTE IS WRONG. OBAMA SAID IRAN, NOT IRAQ.

He has more of an understanding of the situation there in Iraq than McCain who has actually been there. And Hillary is a non issue since she won’t get the nomination. This above vid of obama today in the Iraq hearings is an example of his superior judgement. I can’t wait til he’s in the White House!

FU Iowa   April 9th, 2008 - 3:15 am

Why is he speechifying? He’s talking like this is one of the debates where he states his opinion. Isn’t he supposed to be grilling them instead of grandstanding?

Finally someone with some sense! We need to talk with Iran and the rest of Iraq’s neighbors. We have to try something new, the old way is not working and we CAN NOT afford to get into another war. This guy is on to something, he’s right for America. Obama is the TRUE PATRIOT!

You patriots who think peace with Iran is not possible need to put your money (and your life) where your mouth is. Our troops are over-stretched, so we need you patriots to volunteer for active duty in Iraq or Afghanistan. The U.S. has gone 3 trillion dollars deeper in debt since these wars started, so I’m sure you patriots won’t mind donating a large portion of your combat pay to the war fund. You could sign over your life insurance proceeds to help fund your future war with Iran, which you seem to seek.

Obama has the only solution.

realitybomb   April 9th, 2008 - 4:57 am

peace brothers & sisters,

Obama is leads by speaking truth …with having the mind enough to say what has needed to be said. Even speaking about “talking” with our so-called enemies speaks a truth I haven’t heard for a long time. Speaking with your “enemies” is the better way to peace and stability in the WORLD. You have to stand down your weapons eventually and seek a better solution (we did it with the SOVIETS; the EVIL EMPIRE, anyone remember? We had NUCLEAR warheads aimed at our heads – M.A.D. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutual_assured_destruction)

A very important note about me; I HAVE NEVER MET AN IRAQI, an IRANIAN an ISRAELI or a SOVIET that has done anything to harm me or my family. So none has done me wrong. Why should I have any hatred in my heart? Why should fear? Because some policy makers 10, 25, 50, 100 years ago couldn’t get it straight? Because the generations that should be fixing those problems keep creating more? More fear?

I AM TIRED OF FEAR. How have we been made to feel fear? To come up with more ideas of a future war. To speak of our “on paper enemies”. They live in the region. We are just visiting. We don’t trust them, we give them nothing to trust US. While we debate amongst ourselves the seeds have been planted in our minds. Out of control it has gone and we have delusions that the gun alone will solve our problems.

And somehow it always feels like Joe Citizen, their families and friends pay for our governments lack of good foriegn policy. Our soldiers pay for it. Blood spills for it. Money pays for the blood. It is a horrible cycle of violence that we are in. Be sure our enemies know this too. Do we know the regular Joe there? His family and friends? Are we so convinced to follow the WAR DRUM instead of the PEACE PIPE…a lot of people die in YOUR name if you believe WAR is the only reasonable answer…you can have all my fear and more. Someday when the troops do come home I will let as many of them know that I SPOKE TO PEOPLE about A BETTER SOLUTION TO BRING THEM HOME not keep them where we shouldn’t be.

WAKE UP AMERICA. Where are the children of the 60’s,70’s,80’s? lost in the VIETNAM WAR? lost in a COLD WAR? fighting in a MIDDLE EAST WAR? I was born in 1969. I have heard enough about war. ALL MY LIFE fear for this, fear for that. WAR WAR WAR. FEAR FEAR FEAR. Someone is always out to get US. Our enemies are made by people with more power and money than YOU or I. Let me say that again differently…your enemies are made for you by some powerful people. You may not be invited to the PARTY but you are certainly there to clean up.

And you know…if we don’t fix this stuff now and FIGHT FOR PEACE, the children of the 90’s, like my teenager and possibly your children will be trying to fixed the world we leave them. Right now we only are borrowing it from them and I think we are failing to take care of it in so many ways. We are failing in the history of the world to reach better moral places, spirtuality, and mutual understanding around the world. Imagine your son or daughter having to make the wise choice between WAR or PEACE. Today we choose for them because we a have yet to teach them to speak to their enemies whenever they can achieve peace.

We need great thinkers, wise leaders, truth and honesty to set a new course for this country.
Obama comes closer than most politicians to the ideas that ultimately have great potential to make this world a little better.

Stan   April 9th, 2008 - 5:09 am

Rob   April 9th, 2008 - 5:20 am

Janice –

When did the “country” of Iran “repeatedly wish us dead”? Perhaps it was after we overthrew their democratically elected government and put in a dictator? Or maybe after we shot down a civilian airliner. Whooops.

Either way, I don’t recall them wishing us dead.

Israel has attacked us on several occasions
Iran hasn’t

Israel is the foe.

Rob   April 9th, 2008 - 5:24 am

I disagree with him on economics but he sure is talking sense now. Thanks to the GOP/Zionist Party the likely winner will be a 100 year old coot who wants a 100 year war with Iraq. The people will side with Obama in a heartbeat – especially when McInsane is just as liberal as these other Democrats.

So, either way we are going to get:
Amnesty and more gun control.

Too bad you let the Israel-First crowd take over the GOP – you could have had a REAL choice like Ron Paul who would have the same appeal as Obama (including the young people rallying to support him ) WHILE not getting Amnesty and protecting your gun rights.

Better write and call the GOP and insist they drop McInsane ASAP. He can’t win and will give us all a leftist like Obama.

SoCal Patriot   April 9th, 2008 - 5:27 am

What a loser, no wonder he lost. Thank God that America will NEVER have to endure the embarrassment of a Ron “cut and run” Paul administration.

That libertarian loser and his retarded supporters can kiss my Republican ass…

Bob Scofield   April 9th, 2008 - 7:03 am

SoCal Patriot, post your real name if you are going to insult people. Have some guts. Actually shut up altogether and join the army if you want to support the troops. We should have an overwhelming fighting force in Iraq or nobody in Iraq. I prefer the latter. If you are a Republican who believes we should have a small, overstretched fighting force comprised of poor volunteers while you sit here stateside enjoying the freedom they provide you, spending the money George Bush put in your Republican pocketbooks with his tax breaks, than guess what? Even if you put the word “Patriot” in your name, you are not a patriot. Bring the troops back, or join their ranks. There is no in between. SoCal, how dumb and / or cowardly are you?

Typical White Person   April 9th, 2008 - 9:17 am

Despite his recent statements in support of Israel, I fear that, when push comes to shove, Barack Obama will ‘turn a blind eye’ toward the security of the Jewish State. Obama will allow America’s historical ally to ‘twist in the wind’ not because his middle name is Hussein, not because his Illinois church published anti-Semitic rants by Nation of Islam founder Louis Farrakhan and not because he told 60 Minutes that, as President he would negotiate unconditionally with Syria and Iran. Barack Obama will be coerced to abandon Israel, because Iran and Syria will demand he do so, in exchange for Ahmadinejad and Assad agreeing to stay out of Iraq, in the aftermath of Obama’s immediate and complete unilateral withdrawal from Mesopotamia.
Regardless of what else he were to accomplish during his administration, Obama will be considered a total disaster if after his precipitous departure from Iraq; Iran, Syria and Al Qaeda overrun that country, execute all who fought for their freedom and turn that oil rich land into a breeding ground for Islamic Fundamentalism and terrorist activities.
In order to satisfy his ‘cut & run’ supporters but not ‘snatch defeat from the jaws of victory’, I’m afraid Obama would cut such a deal with Israel’s sworn enemies. He’s already on record supporting the relaxation of restrictions on direct aid to the Palestinians, despite their election of Hamas, and has said that, “nobody is suffering more than the Palestinian people”. Obama voted against a Senate resolution urging the Bush administration to label the Iranian Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization. He opposed that measure because he feared it might give the President the authority to use military action against a nuclear Iran. Does anyone think that an Obama Administration would actually stop Iran’s 25 year march toward securing nuclear weapons?
After fleeing Iraq, Obama’s other great international priority is “making America respected around the world againâ€Â. Considering the dozens and dozens of anti-Israel resolutions passed by the United Nations, Barack could find a lot of friends among the despots and dictators of the world by simply ignoring Israel. Obama mistakes respect for appeasement in a headlong rush to ‘can‘t we all just get along’. Despite his lack of experience and Pollyannaish naiveté, America might survive Obama’s kumbaya presidency, but it could come at the expense of Israel’s existence.

Janice… I am trying not to be furious at your post.

You could have saved yourself a lot of time if you would have just posted “For me, it’s all about the money.”

My son-in-law (GOOGLE Sgt. Buddy James Hughie) was shot by a Taliban sniper while rendering aid to a wounded Afghani Army National. HOW DARE YOU SUGGEST THAT THE WIDOWS DONATE THEIR LIFE INSURANCE MONEY!! YOU DON’T HAVE THE FIRST CLUE WHAT IT IS LIKE LOOKING AT YOUR CHILD AND THREE MONTH OLD GRANDSON AND WONDERING WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR THEM.

If you think the Iranian government (you know the ones who make the IEDs that kill our family members) are such wonderful peace loving people perhaps you should be the point person and get the dialog going. Hop on a plane and get it dont. Or you can just bitch about your financial situation while blaming it on others.

The Sadrists that al-Maliki has been fighting (and will again!) in Basra are funded, armed, and often commanded by the elite Iranian al-Quds force.

Obama is clueless; he wants to sit down and meet each member of the Club for Dictators: Iran, N. Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, Myanmar, Syria, Zimbabwe–and grant them great the stature and legitimacy they need to tighten their brutal grip on power.

“You can’t negotiate with somebody who does not recognize the right of a country to exist so I understand why Israel doesn’t meet with Hamas,” Obama told reporters last month. Yet he does want to meet with Ahmadinejad–who does not recognize Israel’s right to exist, and who frequently calls for its destruction. Why the difference?

Janice   April 10th, 2008 - 4:24 am

JimBo,
I was making a cynical comment about bloggers who say war is the only way. I seriously doubt that most military people, especially wives and widows, are on the Internet writing that war is the only way. I was making the point that people who want war ought to be the first to give their all, because somebody is going to have to fight the war and pay for it. Why not the people who think war is the only answer?

If war is the only way, then the U.S. is about to fall like ancient Rome did. Ancient Rome got to the point where it couldn’t afford to police the world and it fell. That is where we are now, except that we, as a nation, are trillions of dollars in debt. How much longer do you think other countries, such as Communist China, will continue to loan to a USA that is in a recession with the value of the dollar falling?

My position is better stated up near the top of this blog – don’t know why they stuck it up there. It is the 2nd one down right now, under “Wowee.”

I lost a 26-year-old son two years ago, although not to the war. He was my only son. So I do know what it is to lose a son. If presidents would try negotiations first, instead of pre-emptive war, then maybe the loss of other people’s sons and daughters could be avoided.

I have two nephews and two sons-in-law who have miraculously survived tours of duty in Iraq. Another son-in-law has joined the military because of the enlistment bonus and health insurance: he felt that he couldn’t get ahead working at a good factory job because of the extreme amount that was being withheld from his pay for taxes and health insurance + the high cost of transportation to get to work. He will surely go to Iraq or Afghanistan. He will be putting his life on the line as a direct result of the poor situation of hourly-wage workers in this country.

So I want a president who supports policies which will enable the average American to survive by working for an hourly wage – the way it used to be. If you read Barack Obama’s two books, then you will see that he has always been concerned about the needs of the average person. But if the USA has to borrow continuously to fight wars, then there will never be any money available for the infrastructure or alternative energy or anything else that could improve our lives.

Janice   April 10th, 2008 - 5:13 am

carl,

What about the dictators in China? Bill Clinton awarded them “most favored nation” status for trade. How come we made those dictators rich, while even losing American jobs in order to do so, but we cannot speak to any other dictators in order to avoid catastrophic war?

The reason we could speak to the President of Iran is that he has not denied the right of the USA to exist, as far as I know. Ahmadinejad is a professor and understands scholarly debate. He could be challenged handily concerning Israel’s right to exist and other issues by using historical facts, international law, and basic precepts of morality which are common to all major religions.

In March, according to what I read, there were demonstrations by Iranian youths for more freedom. I noticed the article did NOT say that the demonstrators were killed. If that is the case, then Iran’s dictators are currently not as severe as our “friends” the Chinese. This is a good moment to seize the opportunity for negotiations with Iran, for we need Iran’s cooperation to end terrorism and to do something about out-of-control oil prices.

Ferli   April 13th, 2008 - 9:27 pm

I am the “flip flopper†who would vote for Obama over McCain then flip and vote for McCain over Clinton.

There are policies which Obama supports that hurt my sensibilities. As a father I fell in love with my son long before his birth. I would give my life over his. Sorry, just can’t help feeling that way.

But I also know that Barack was 100% right on the Iraq war. As a hunter I know what guns can and can’t accomplish. Terrorism is a spiritual (not religious) war. We must win the hearts of the hopeless.

The rhetoric of evil enemy is misguided. We can’t fight our way to victory. As much as Bush/McCain use Germany and Korea as their guiding examples… they are simply wrong. Terrorism is not a state… it is a state of mind. Persuasion is the only strategy. In this war… words do matter!

Hillary and McCain don’t get it. I don’t fault them. They are just politicians.

McCain is an American hero. I deeply respect his service. If the Soviet Union attacks us I hope to God we call on him for guidance (and I am sure he’d be there). But they won’t because there is no “Soviet Unionâ€Â.

Hillary and Bill do know how to manage. And they certainly thrive on politics. It is the “fun part†for them.

However, terrorism is emotional. Words are sacred. You don’t blow yourself up as a technical matter. You don’t memorize the sacred text for fun.

Obama has shown the capacity for understanding the human spirit. Might sound simple and even ridiculous, but in reality it is the highest level of leadership. He is our greatest hope to alter the internal dialog of the hopeless. And that is where this battle plays out.
