The Officer was right, the peoples Liberty should not have to wait for tv news crews.

Let’s see, plenty of parking, they paid for parking, no major inconveniences for anyone, and the meter maid had ZERO discretion or flexibility as to ask them to move the vehicles to proper parking or be ticketed. Totally ridiculous. The officer took the opportunity knowing full well she was going to be on camera enforcing and playing up her rigid ethos in hopes her supervisor would see this and give her that promotion to Chief meter maid. This is a small abuse of power that adds to the police state mentality…and says nothing of the cognitive or even basic human social interplay to create a healthy community between law enforcement and citizens. Not all laws are enforced 100 percent of the time, not even by law enforcement officers who drive over the posted speed limits on non-emergency calls. The argument that its just their job to ticket everyone without using the critical thinking part of their brain on the job is a cop out. (no pun intended)

Additionally speaking when an officer writes a speeding ticket for less than what you were actually going, and gives you that “break”, that is called discretion. Officers have that ability to use it. There was no infringement of liberty imposed by the News crew, just the opposite.

Enforce the existing laws and you get criticized by the Main Stream Media…where’s Obama calling the cop stupid?

Sounds like Governor Jan Brewer being attacked for enforcing the laws in Arizona!

Spot on but unfortunately too many of the above posters either didn’t listen to the video clip or willingly ignored the part where the news casters said multiple times that they paid for the parking in advanced and had the proof in their van. What should be the focus here is that what’s assumed to be a paid public official is wasting her time and the tax payer’s money by writing these tickets.

In addition what should be noticed but isn’t to the posters who blame the TV crew is this crap where cities are enforcing laws never enforced before or creating new laws in order to collect money from their citizens. Where’s the outrage over local officials ignoring the obvious (in this clip the TV station paid for parking before the shot) just to collect money for their pet projects. I’m sure each and every one who blamed the TV crew could count at least 5 instances in their own areas where their local governments are just as guilty as in this clip in Santa Monica, CA.

I don’t understand the bashing of the news crew, if they really did pay for parking then why is the cop writing tickets? The lady doing the story was not rude, she just said give me the tickets and tried to continue with the story. I thought it was funny.

On May 25, 2010, at 8:58 a.m., traffic officers from the Santa Monica Police Department received a call for service from the parking manager of the 1550 beach lot; Central Parking. The caller reported that several vehicles were in the parking lot refusing to pay.

Upon arrival, a Traffic Service Officer was advised by the attendant that eleven vehicles were parked in parking spots and had not paid. The attendant advised that his supervisor approached the news crew at 7:40 a.m. and advised them they needed to pay for the parking spots. The news crew promised to pay for the spaces before 9:00 a.m. When the attendant approached the news crew at 8:50 a.m. to pay for the parking spaces, they ignored him. The parking attendant contacted his supervisor to call the Santa Monica Police Department.

A Traffic Service Officer approached the news crew and advised them she was there to address the issue of not paying for the parking spaces. A representative from the news crew stated they had already paid for the spaces and had a permit. The traffic service officer asked the representative for the receipt and permits. The representative walked away and did not come back.

At 9:20 a.m., the traffic service officer issued four citations for failing to pay to the vehicles that were parked in parking spaces. Although the news reporter stated on the live television broadcast that they had paid for the parking spaces at the time the officer was issuing the citations, the news crew actually paid for the parking spaces at 9:40 a.m., after the citations were issued.

Listen to the words she used. At ~2 min 20 sec into the clip she states the money is in the van.
Therefore, she had not yet paid for parking.

I bet to all you who are speaking of the arrogance of the new crew, THEY PAID FOR THE PARKING!!! I can about guess you are perhaps liberals because most liberals speak of the arrogance of others. Hand you paid for you parking and still received a ticket, you’d be trying to get the news crew to air your story. If there is arrogance in this story, its the government!
