The riots that took place outside Paris this week were caused by a "yobocracy" rather than social deprivation, according to Nicolas Sarkozy. The president has pledged to punish those who shot at policemen during the riots in the town of Villiers le Bel during two nights of clashes. More than 80 police were hurt, some wounded by gunfire. On Thursday a silent march was held in the town in memory of the two teenage boys whose deaths on Sunday -- in a collision of their motorbike with a police car -- sparked the violence.
