UN Cuts Its Aids Estimate By Six Million

The United Nations said Tuesday that the number of people with HIV/AIDS is at last levelling out. West Africa has thus far been spared the worst of the epidemic that has ravaged the south and east of the continent, but the number of cases there is growing. In Cameroon, the infection rate has hit 5 percent of the population, a critical threshold beyond which it could become endemic. Now, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS is backing an innovative grass-roots drive to get anti-retroviral drugs into the communities that need them.
