Venezuelans To Vote On Increasing Chavez’s Power

On Sunday Venezuelans decide in a referendum whether to overhaul Venezuela's constitution and thereby allow Chavez to tighten his already strong grip on power. The latest polls show his reform plans could be defeated with even traditional Chavez strongholds -- particularly the slums ringing Caracas and other cities -- voting against the plan. Most of the poor that Chavez is exploiting don’t have any understanding of the proposals he’s having a referendum on. All of the educated Venezuelans I’ve talked to are upset with the reforms going in in the country. People are voting party lines without any true understanding of the issues at stake. I guess we can’t really fault them because the same party-line voting goes on here in the U.S. irrespective of the issues at stake.
