I was born and have lived all of my 46 years in the deep south (Georgia) and I can honestly say that dog fighting is not an accepted part of the culture. To suggest that Vick should be excused because this is part of the culture insults every one living in the south. Contrary to Whoopee and BABA’s view, the south is not populated with only rednecks who spend their days fighting dogs and entering their babies in beauty pageants. To lump us all into one category based on the actions of a deviant few is bigotry. But does anyone really expect anything intelligent to come out of Whoppee’s mouth?

It doesn’t seem like she is pardoning his behaviour in so much as asking why we are focusing all our attention on one person when it is so very obvious that we are talking about a LOT of people that do this. You have to ask the question, how many county sheriffs are looking the other way in the South on this issue. And if they are, then that gives people that do this the rational that it’s socially acceptable (in their neck of the woods).

I was born in 1939 in the same metropolitan area as Michael. I have lived here most of my life accept for college and graduate school. It is an urban, suburban area of about a million and a half people from many parts of the US and many foreign countries. I never saw or heard of dogfighting in this area. I was wondering how long it would take Whoopie Goldberg to put her foot in her mouth on the View. I figured it might be a few weeks, knowing her predisposition toward saying stupid things. About 2 yrs. ago, there was a local pre-game show for the Houston Texans that profiled one of the linemen on a hunting trip in Africa. He killed a male lion and a buffalo, neither for food. It made me sick to see him shoot and kill the lion for sport. People kill wolves, fox, bear, bobcats etc. for the sport of it. Why is it ok to hunt defenseless animals for sport? What is the difference in sport hunting and what Mike Vick was doing? Hunting like dog fighting is the THRILL TO KILL NO MATTER WHO DOES IT AND FOR WHATEVER REASON! Dog fighting is not only immoral but also illegal, but hunting defenseless animals is called ” TROPHEY”! As an owner of an American Pit Bull Terrior I am glad Vik has brought attention to this horrible practice to the nation. Dog fighting is huge and prevelant throughout the country. These people bring a bad name to an otherwise great breed. Most Pit bulls that attack humans were breed for fighting are not good with people. The breed originally started out aimed at being a family dog. Yes historically pit bulls were fought but they were raised with the family and if they showed any kind of human aggression they were put down.

Dog fighting is more common than most people would suspect. It is here and it will be here for a long time. Acceptable no, but if someone can make a “buck” or satisfy a desire they will do it.
As for the culling of curs it happens in every form of quality control. If an animal doesn’t fit the bill it is eliminated. If more so called breeders culled their bad stock instead of trying to maximize their profits there wouldn’t be such a large population of unwanted pets.
